Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires is a city where you will feel right at home and of course, you are guaranteed to improve your Spanish! Argentina is probably most famous for its asados (barbecues), Tango, futbol, Borges, economic/political history and Buenos Aires. What can be said about Buenos Aires? For starters, every single person should visit this city if given the opportunity.

It is nothing short of spectacular and it is made up of distinct and flavorful neighborhoods. The city is very walker friendly and it is easy to explore the bustling streets, tree lined avenues, classic cafes, corner bars and stylish restaurants on foot.

Besides the fact that Argentina is one of the best travel values in the world, the beauty of Argentina lies in the fact that it is full of Argentines, which are arguably the most beautiful people in the world.

There is never a dull moment in Buenos Aires, as the city never sleeps. Here you can find vigor for life that you will see in few other places, such as New York City, Paris or Madrid.  It is full of a contagious energy that you can take with you at the end of your trip!

When to Go:
Why not go now?!?  Buenos Aires’ many attractions are not dependent at all on the season.  Buenos Aires enjoys a warm and benign climate during the whole year, which permits you to walk around the city during all seasons of the year.

Things to See and Do

  • Culture - This city has it all:  The Colón Theatre and small experimental theaters, old book stores and new cultural centers, more than one hundred museums, historic cafés, Tango, milonga, parks and bars.
  • Music – There is something for all musical styles (Tango, Folklore, Classical Music, Rock, Jazz and Electronic Music).
  • Theaters - Buenos Aires always enjoys an intense theatre activity. Plays are constantly being presented throughout the city.
  • Cultural Centers – The city’s cultural centers are more than a theater hall or an art gallery.  Many cultural centers offer a great variety of workshops and courses, such as film criticism, cartoons, choir, folk dances, tango, literary workshop, and acting, among others.

  • Museums - Buenos  Aires has important national and international art museums.  One of the newest museums founded in the city is Malba: Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires.
  • Festivals - The festivals organized by the City’s Culture Secretariat are one of the big tourist attractions. Among them:  Tango festival, International Festival of Independent Cinema of Buenos Aires (Bafici), Metropolitan Championship of Tango Salón, Buenos Aires Meeting of Jazz and other Music, Festival of Young Art - Sub 18, Worldwide Championship of Tango, Festival of the Light and International Festival of Buenos Aires (Biannual) among others.
  • Art - Different vanguards of Argentine masters as well as worldwide exhibitors are always present within the Buenos Aires art circuit.  You can always enjoy exhibitions of paintings, photographs and sculptures.
  • Tango - Buenos Aires is the birthplace and the world capital of tango, a fusion of European and African music.  Buenos Aires is full of tango houses with live orchestras and dancers.  You may also go to the milongas, places where you dance tango.

  • Sports - Sports are an important element of every day life in Buenos Aires.
  • Soccer - Buenos Aires is thrilled by soccer.  The local soccer championship is ranked among the five most important events of this kind in the world.
  • Polo - Polo is the sport of the high classes. It is played at a very high speed on horses bred in La Pampa province.
  • Horse Races - This is a very popular sport and races are held in the Palermo race track, 15 minutes away from downtown.
  • Tennis - It is played by thousands of people every day. In addition, the city is the site of one of the most significant South American contests - the Buenos Aires Open.
  • Golf - If you are willing to enjoy an outdoor activity in the heart of the city, there are four golf courses where you may have private lessons, play freely or see competitions.
  • Nature - Buenos Aires, unlike other big cities, has a lot of green spaces. You can see this just by walking around the city.

Nightlife - Buenos Aires is never more alive than it is at night.  It is what you'd expect from a city that invented tango. Avenues come alive with people on their way to concerts, festivals, theater, cinema, cafés, milonga and tango houses, pubs, and discos.  Night activities in Buenos Aires are long lasting.

Discos – They open at midnight and close between 2 and 7 am.  For those unfamiliar with the “movida” porteña, an important tip is that everything starts very late. People usually go to dance at 2:30 am.  It is quite common to have breakfast before going to bed.

Restaurants – The dining options in Buenos Aires are endless. This is a city that takes dining seriously, and meals can easily last a few hours.  Traditional and modern parrilla restaurants serve up a cornucopia of meats to a discerning clientele, while pizza and pasta restaurants are found on every street corner. But there has been a food revolution in recent years and many international influences have crept in, including modern Mediterranean and Asian food. Argentina also has some of the world’s best wines, which shouldn’t be missed.

Shopping – You better bring an empty suitcase!  The city has several shopping circuits, each offering different articles: antiques in San Telmo, books in Corrientes Avenue, leather items in Retiro neighborhood, souvenirs in La Boca. The avant-garde in objects, clothes and decorative elements is in Palermo Viejo neighborhood.
